Construction and Trials

H-3 under construction at the Moran Company yards, Seattle, WA., 1912. This is a view looking aft where the torpedo tubes cut through the forward ballast tank. The smaller hole in the center is for the shaft that turns the rotating bow cap. The superstructure has not yet been installed. The cylinder in the right center is the torpedo room access trunk, behind it is the angled torpedo loading hatch.

H-3 returning from Seattle to Bremerton, WA., March 1914. LT Munroe, the Commanding Officer, is on the bridge. H-3 had been refueling in Seattle and was returning to the Puget Sound Navy Yard. There is an unidentified cruiser in the background.

H-3 running trials on Bellingham Bay, north of Seattle near the Canadian border, January 1914. The bay is calm, but the boat is running at a good clip and pushing up a large bow wave.

Another view of the Bellingham Bay trials, from the port bow. H-3 had been commissioned at this point, but it appears as though there are several civilians aboard, probably Electric Boat or Moran employees observing the tests.

First Grounding and Drydocking

This image is a newspaper archive image that had been highly modified by the papers artist to make the stand out for use in the paper printing process of the times. it was also printed reversed for the newspaper for use in their printing process to come out a "positive" in the paper. I have corrected that to show the correct way around.

The photo that is normally seen of this incident is with the tide high. We have not seen this low tide before.
