S-45 shown pierside at an unknown location but possibly in an east coast shipyard, approximately 1925. The tube sticking through her bow stem is a towing fairlead pipe, used to pass a towing chain through, which can be see folded back along the starboard side.

S-45 in the midst of a major overhaul at the Mare Island Navy Yard, October 17, 1943. She had been in the thick of the fight against the Japanese since the opening of hostilities, and her condition shows it.

S-45 during her wartime overhaul at Mare Island, October 17, 1943. Her conning tower fairwater has been heavily rebuilt, with a deck for a 20 mm anti-aircraft gun added forward of the bridge. She has a new mast aft of the periscopes for a SD air-search radar, and SJ surface-search radar has been added forward.

This photo give a good representation of the extensive work done to S-45's fairwater during the 1943 overhaul at Mare Island. The new 20 mm gun deck is very prominent, with a ammunition storage locker installed underneath it. The tripod on the new deck is the Mk 10 mount for the 20 mm gun, which was normally dismounted and taken below before diving.
