L-2 is shown here in the company of sister boat L-3 (Submarine No. 42), likely during shakedown cruise off the New England coast, fall of 1916. L-2 appears to be running on her battery, as there is no exhaust smoke from either engine. She may also be anchored.

L-2 from the starboard side while on shakedown cruise, fall of 1916. In this photo the anchor chain can just barely be seen running down from the towing fairlead bullnose at the tip of the bow. A large ship is in the background. We are speculating that this may be Narragansett Bay off Newport, R.I.

L-2 is shown here, fourth boat from the left, in the reserve fleet in Norfolk, VA. The photo date is approximately 1930. The L-2 had been decommissioned in 1923 and had been held in reserve near Norfolk since that date. She was sold for scrap on 28 November 1933. From left to right are an unknown K-boat, K-3, L-11, L-2, L-3, and L-9.
