F-2 (SS-21) Qualification Book
This Qualification Book came to me over 20 years ago and about 3 computers ago. The information has been lost as to the identity of the kind individual who donated it. Many Thank Yous go out to this person for doing so. -Ric
Very early drawings of the "F" class submarines. The navy was was to yet incorporate Bow Planes into submarine design.
The concept was first experimented with using the submarine Grayling (later D-2) [seen at Right] to prove the concept. The submarines were becoming too big to be able to efficiently control the vessel while underwater just using the stern planes. In this photo the planes are just attached to the hull. Note the wooden box on the right to allow an observer to view the planes in operation without getting too wet during the testing process.US Navy Photos
