John Rodney Marsh
Lt. John Rodney Marsh, CO of the USS C-3 in 1918.
He was born Dec. 5, 1892 in Muncie, Indiana. He was a graduate of Central High School in Muncie in 1911. He was a 1915 graduate of Purdue University where he may have been in the NROTC since there is no record of him in the Annapolis yearbooks.
He was commissioned an Ensign, possibly by taking officer testing at Annapolis due to the advent of WW I. There were many instances of accelerated graduation both during WW I and WW II. He applied for and attended Submarine School New London in Groton, Conn where he was promoted to LTjg. In 1918 he was again promoted to a full Lt. and was placed in command of the submarine USS C-3 which was stationed at the Panama Canal guarding it from possible enemy actions.
After the war he left the Navy and took a position with the Indiana Bridge Company as an engineer, and later was affiliated with Ball Brothers, In 1937 he went to Toledo to accept an engineering position with the Owens-Corning (Fiberglass) Corporation. He returned to Muncie, seriously ill, early in December 1944.
He died on Saturday Dec. 30, 1944, at 5:40 p.m. at Ball Hospital. He is buried at Beech Grove Cemetery, Muncie, In. He left a widow, Catherine C. Marsh and a son, John Ryan Marsh.
