View of the aft torpedo room, looking aft. There is berthing for eight to ten men here, in addition to weapons storage. A total of six Mk 14 torpedoes were carried in this room, two loaded in the tubes and two reloads each. Stern torpedo tubes gave a submarine skipper a significant tactical advantage by drastically cutting back on the number of course changes needed to bring a torpedo tube to bear on a target. Chains and hoists for moving the weapons around the room are visible in the overhead. Having a bunk in the torpedo room was actually a highly desired spot. It was quiet and you did not get disturbed by the food service activity.
