Navy portrait of Torpedoman Second Class Francis H. Beaumont of the USS Salmon. Beaumont had previously served on the USS Permit before transfering to Salmon. Almost all of Salmon's crew were transferred, en-mass, to the Stickleback when she was deemed too badly damaged to save.

Citation for the Navy Cross awarded to Harly Nauman for Salmons actions in damaging a Japanese escort vessel in a desperate surface gun action where she charged the Japanese vessel and drove in so close she couldn't depress her guns far enough to return fire. Salmon scored a huge number of 4 inch, 40MM and 20MM hits and machine gun fire. The Japanese vessel was riddled with holes and 4 were killed and 29 wounded. The other Japanese vessels failed to take action as Salmon broadcast in the clear for all submarines in the area to come to her assistance. They began looking for other submarines allowing Salmon to escape into a rain squall. Salmon was so badly damaged from her depth charging she returned to US and was never to dive again. She was struck from the Navy lists in 1946.
