Production photos from the 1931 movie "The Seas Beneath"

V-4 repainted as the fictitious "U 172" for the 1931 John Ford movie "The Seas Beneath".

Photo provided by Robert Morgan

V-4 is shown alongside the USS Bass (SF-5) probably in San Diego, early 1931.

Three more photos from the Quigley collection of the V-4 repainted in U-boat colors for the movie.

This photo is of interest because it shows the starboard side accommodation ladder open and rigged out. This greatly eased the movement of crewmen to/from waiting small boats.

A three photo sequence showing V-4 surfacing in the midst of some sail boats used in the production. Perhaps a little to close for safety, but then again safety standards were different in those days.

Director John Ford (with foot on the leg of the chair) discussing a scene with the script writer and cast and the V-4's aft deck near the mine room escape hatch. V-4's commanding officer, LCDR William Quigley is on Ford's immediate left, with another V-4 officer.
